Volunteer: Transcription

Among the many resources available at the Center for Dubuque History is a reference file created by local genealogist Biays Bowerman. This resource is a name index of 27 primary source books and documents including an early census, voter lists, and cemeteries. The indexed materials were created between 1830 and 1917 and are an important resource for finding information on early settlers. This entire project was completed by hand and includes thousands of handwritten index cards which now need to be transcribed into an Excel spreadsheet. This work will need to be done at the CDH, but can be done anytime the Library is open after training. The ability to read cursive will be helpful.

Volunteer: Hospitality volunteer

The center is a welcoming place where individuals meet new friends and enjoy conversation. When individuals come to the center for a tutoring session, time is allotted for individuals to converse with others over coffee and tea. Snacks or desserts provided by the center. During this time, students and tutors from all over the world engage in stimulating conversation, share stories or even bring in cuisine from their countries of origin. Many of our English-language and citizenship students also are parents or have childcare responsibilities, so valued volunteers help care for their children, allowing the adults to focus on their studies. Hospitality volunteers may help with childcare, food preparation and welcoming visitors to our Center!

Volunteer: Help Needed! DBQ Shovel Crew! Can You Dig It!

Volunteer on the DBQ Shovel Crew this winter! To help, complete this survey https://arcg.is/0KmSP!

As a DBQ Shovel Crew volunteer you will be paired with a resident in need of assistance who is not physically able to remove snow and ice from their city sidewalk and do not have other resources to remove the snow and ice such as neighbors, friends, or a hired service. We are seeking volunteers who can help throughout the winter season.  The commitment is caring for assigned addresses all winter.

We are all pedestrians at some point in the day, whether walking to a car, the bus, to work, or just in your neighborhood. Your help in keeping sidewalks clear after snow and ice events is a meaningful way to help neighbors in need and the community!

Want to volunteer, but in need of snow and ice removal equipment? We may be able to help! Sign up and we’ll follow up with you on getting access to shovels and deicer salt.

If you need help shoveling this snow season or know someone who does, please contact Rob McDonald with the City of Dubuque Engineering Department at (563) 589-4159. Rob will connect qualifying individuals in need with a DBQ Shovel Crew volunteer.

Please complete this survey https://arcg.is/0KmSP first and then RESPOND to this opportunity (blue button at the top of this post).  We required that all volunteers sign up for an account with Volunteer DBQ, this streamlines the communication process so we can help more people!  When you first sign up for an account on Volunteer DBQ you are only required to put Name, Phone, and Email, which makes the whole process able to be completed in less than 5 minutes!

Once you are paired with a resident/address, we will be in touch with you to sign our volunteer waiver. Thank you!

You are invited to join The Longest Day Team Task Force where you will play a vital role in team recruitment and cultivation, as well as marketing and promoting the event. Meetings and check ins will take place throughout the next few months via conference call.

The Longest Day is a unique sunrise-to-sunset team fundraising event to honor the strength, heart and endurance of those affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Held on June 20, the summer solstice, teams will participate in any activity of their choice to raise awareness and funds for the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association. Visit The Longest Day website at alz.org/tld.

Perfect for interest groups, runners, golfers, bridge players, you name it!

Volunteer: Youth Restorative Justice Facilitator

Restorative Justice is an approach to justice that seeks to repair harm by providing an opportunity for youth who have caused harm and those who have been harmed to come together to communicate about and address their needs in the aftermath of the crime. Restorative Justice Circles Conferences provide a space for:

Community members to express how the harm has impacted them Youth offenders to take responsibility for their actions. Understand the harm they have caused. Give them an opportunity to redeem themselves. And to discourage them from causing further harm.

The Dubuque Youth Restorative Justice program trains facilitators to provide Restorative Justice Conferences or Circles that provides an opportunity for those involved to come together to address the harmful behavior in a process that explores the harm and needs, and a path toward accountability and repair.

When a youth commits an offense for the first time, they are given the opportunity to join the Dubuque Youth Restorative Justice Program in lieu of jail time. Once youth has entered the program, they will be given to a trained Facilitator. Facilitators coordinate a Circle Conference with individuals including those who were harmed, those who caused the harm, community members, parents, and other supportive people utilizing the Circle Conference structured process. The goal of the Circle Conference is to assist participants in developing a mutually acceptable agreement which could allow criminal charges to be dropped for that youth. After the agreement has been made, facilitators complete follow up with the youth and their supportive people to ensure that the agreement and other requirements are being met.

$50 stipend offered for each completed case.

Time commitment varies based on cases.

Other responsibilities include maintaining confidentiality and completing all paperwork in a timely manner.

Police record background check is required.

Free Training is required: August 18 & 19 from 8:30am-5pm (Both dates required) (Lunch and snacks provided!!)

Volunteer: Make a Difference- Mentor a student today!

The positive impact of an adult role model on student success is powerful – and this impact extends far beyond a student’s teachers and other school staff. Mentors from across our community build life-changing relationships with students to support their success in and out school.

What is the Student Mentoring Program?

Student mentoring in the Dubuque Community School District is defined as a one-to-one relationship between a youth and an adult that occurs over a prolonged period of time.

A mentor provides consistent support, guidance, and concrete help to a student who is in need of a positive role model. Students involved in the mentoring program may be going through a difficult and/or challenging situation, a period of life in which they need extra support, or they may simply need to have another significant adult present in their life.

The goal of student mentoring is to help students involved in the mentoring program to gain the skills and confidence to be responsible for their own futures.

To achieve this goal, mentors commit to mentoring a student:

for a half hour, each week for the entire 9-month school year during school hours on school grounds

Volunteer: Garden Tender

Convivium Urban Farmstead grows food on over 7000 square feet of garden space. This food is used in a variety of ways towards supporting Convivium’s mission of “improving life through food.” Some of the food is enjoyed in our restaurant or merchandise, where the proceeds go toward supporting our non-profit outreach programs. Some of the food is handed out as ingredients in our weekly free casserole program. And some of the food is picked by the general public as free, accessible, healthy produce.

Volunteer gardeners are an important part of the labor force that brings that food to life, gets it on to people’s plates, and helps fulfill Convivium’s mission.

Garden Tenders keep Convivium’s gardens healthy, thriving, and productive. Garden Tenders work at recurring weekly volunteer sessions alongside a Garden Guru preparing beds, planting, mulching, watering, weeding, harvesting, and doing all the little things that help food to grow. Garden experience is beneficial but not as important as a willingness to learn and a desire to become part of the Convivium mission of improving life through food.

Volunteer: Court Appointed Special Advocates Needed

Volunteer: Temporary Safe Place for Domestic Violence Survivor (1–2 Nights)

WHAT DO YOU DO?

A Safe Home Volunteer offer a safe place for clients of domestic abuse and their families to stay in an emergency for 1-3 days/night. You provide a completely confidential, safe, no-questions-asked environment. ( A safe home is different than a shelter.)

HOW DOES IT WORK?

A volunteer receives a call from an advocate who asks if you are available that evening to host a survivor (and sometimes her children). If you are available, the advocate or a transport volunteer will bring the client to your home. She is instructed to keep the location confidential for her own safety as well as yours.

If requested, an advocate can bring supplies from our food pantry and personal care closet with items that clients may need while staying with you. These items include food, toiletries, and towels and are donated by generous communities throughout our service area.

After a night or two, when more permanent housing is secured, the advocate will transport the survivor to her new place to stay.  At anytime during the client’s stay, you are welcome to contact the advocate on call for any answers or direction you may need.

WHAT IS THE COMMITMENT?

You can decide when or when not to host a survivor, depending upon your availability.  It is best to keep the volunteer coordinator updated on any vacations or stretches of time when you absolutely will not be available.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENT? Be 18 years of age or older. Take the 30-hour training. Possess an open, non-judgmental attitude toward survivors of domestic abuse and their situation. Complete the application process, and submit a Safe Home Checklist. Make a one-year commitment. Exceptions may be made. Complete two hours per year of Continuing Education, as required by Iowa law. All hours must be from a training or webinar. (College classes count toward this requirement. A copy of the syllabus with details of the course and textbooks used, the institution’s name, instructor’s name, and degree would be required.) Be available to clients while they stay with you for any questions and concerns they have regarding their stay or situation. Notify the advocate on call if you need assistance or supplies, to talk about anything, or to confer about client pick-up and drop-off. Keep complete and accurate records while clients stay with you and submit any necessary reports to the advocate when they call or when the client is picked up from your home. Provide volunteer coordinator with vehicle insurance every six months in case you have to provide emergency transportation
